Where to find good music for nothing

www.barefiles.com
Sites such as barefiles.com are a major reason why Dubstep has traversed the planet faster than a fast-food chain intent on world domination. It was set up by 18 year-old Londoner Deapoh, who simply wanted to make 'bare' (as in loads) Dubstep DJ mixes available for free download and spread a genre receiving zero mainstream airplay as far as possible. It contains the history of Dubstep with mixes dating back to before the sound had a name - Skream (2004, pictured), Kode9 (2002) and Distance (2001) - with a staggering 2,345 mixes also encompassing UK garage and grime. Barefiles is evidence that Dubstep is a caring, sharing, democratic scene: anyone can upload a mix and whether it stays or goes is down to how frequently it's downloaded.

Yes, Big up Deapoh every time. I first heard of Dubstep because of a mix I downloaded from Barefiles. Rinse FM, Skream, Youngsta/Task all showed up on my radar because of sets downloaded from Barefiles. It's also what led me to meet Conquest and the rest of the React.FM family.I downloaded one of Quest's React sets from Barefiles after hearing Skream play Hard Food on Stella Sessions(back when Rinse sets were still hosted there). When the site was shut down for a while I was very sad.I checked back frequently until it finally came back online again. When one of my own mixes was hosted there last summer, I was very pleased to say the least! (My mixing has improved a bit since I uploaded those first mixes) The Baredubs label is a quality imprint as well. Again, Maximum Respect to Deapoh. Big Up.
